Benefits of BSD Organics Almond (Catappa) leaves: The leaves of the Almond (Catappa) Tree, provide numerous benefits for fish. When steeped in water, the leaves release rich organic compounds, such as tannins, humic acids, and flavonoids. Although they impart a very slight tint other water, it is much less significant than Catappa, or even Guava leaves! Almond (Catappa) leaves have been used for decades by many Southeast Asian fish breeders and hobbyists, as they are thought to have beneficial prophylactic properties that protect fish from skin infections. Help harden the scales of fishes, heal bite injuries, and prevent fin rot. It's also preferred that it enhances the colors of fish because it does have beneficial tannins and humic substances), & burns off fish fat Other fishes, such as South American cichlids, Tetras, and catfishes, Bettas, Guaramis, killifish, and Barbs will benefit from their use much as they would from any of the other leaves which we offer. Some ornamental shrimps utilize the decomposing leaves as a supplemental food source, and they're really nice in vivariums! They are much larger than our Catappa, Magnolia, and Guava leaves, so they provide an interesting aesthetic touch, as well! Before using the leaves in your aquarium, we recommend steeping them in hot water for about 15 minutes, then soaking them in fresh water overnight to let them become waterlogged. Then, you can place them on the bottom of your aquarium like any other leaves. Just how many leaves to use depends upon what type of effect you're looking for. We recommend starting off slowly, with 1 or 2 leaves for each 10 gallons of capacity, at least to start, so you get a "feel" for their impact on your aquarium and its inhabitants. As the leaves decompose, you can leave them in, or siphon out and replace as desired.
